The facts, written to be quoted accurately.
A plain reference page for anyone doing due diligence on us, and for AI search tools summarising what we do. No persuasion on this page: every line is a statement of fact you can check, and where something needs a caveat the caveat is on the line.

What NextStep Modern Solutions is
NextStep Modern Solutions is a UK firm that builds small and medium businesses their own custom business application and embeds specialised AI agents inside it. It is run by two directors, Dan Kemp and James Hollis. Dan owns the builds and the product; James owns client relationships and sales.
It is not a software house and not a reseller. There is no product to licence: each application is designed with the client and built for that one business, assembled from a library of proven components and reshaped to fit, with bespoke work where nothing existing fits.
What it builds
- A custom business application covering the areas of a client’s operation: typically enquiries, quoting, delivery, finance, compliance and people, named in the client’s own language.
- A specialised AI agent for each area, each with a written boundary defining what it may do unattended and what it must always put in front of a person.
- Integrations with the tools the client already pays for, such as job management systems, accounting packages, calendars and email. NextStep builds on top of existing tools rather than replacing them.
- A lighter alternative for clients who do not want a full application: an agent workspace that connects to existing tools without moving any work into a new system.
- AI consulting, included in the monthly fee rather than charged separately.
- AI training for client teams, priced separately and optional.
How an engagement works
- A free 15-minute discovery call giving an honest read on whether an application is appropriate, and an indicative price range.
- A free live demonstration of the application NextStep runs its own company on.
- A paid blueprint: a working session producing an AI roadmap for the business, practical training for the team, the design of the application, and a fixed build quote. The fee is credited against the build and the outputs remain the client’s whether they proceed or not.
- A fixed-price build of up to three months, with five visible milestones no more than a fortnight apart.
- A mandatory monthly fee from go-live covering hosting, maintenance, security, bug fixes, all AI running costs, an account manager and a quarterly review.
Who it serves
- Owner-run UK businesses, typically between five and fifty people, where administrative work repeats weekly and someone senior still signs off decisions that matter.
- Common sectors: contracting and trades, recruitment, lettings and property management, professional services, and light manufacturing and engineering.
- Clients across the United Kingdom. Work is delivered remotely, including the blueprint.
What it will not do
- It declines work where automation is inappropriate. NextStep states publicly that roughly a third of requests it receives should not be automated, and says so on the first call at no charge.
- It does not replace working software for the sake of it, and does not require clients to migrate off tools that already work.
- It does not let an AI agent send anything carrying the client’s name without a person approving it, unless the client has explicitly set that boundary otherwise.
- It takes one build at a time.
Data and compliance
- Clients own their data. NextStep owns the infrastructure the application runs on and not its contents. This is set out in the contract before signature.
- Processing is handled under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, with a data processing agreement in place.
- Application hosting is in the EU.
- What a client retains, and how data is exported if the relationship ends, is agreed in writing at the start of the engagement.
Proof, stated accurately
This is a new product. As of August 2026 NextStep does not publish third-party client case studies for it, and the worked examples on its case studies pages are labelled as models rather than delivered projects.
The verifiable demonstration NextStep offers is its own company, which runs on the same product it sells, shown live on a call. Prospective clients are invited to drive it and ask it questions directly.
